Timatanga Kōrero

​Waipuka is the name of the lands that stretch south from Ocean beach, along the east coast of Hawkes Bay to the Waingongoro stream in Waimarama, 5km inland and North to Cape Kidnappers. It is more commonly known as Ocean Beach, Hawkes Bay, and is a favourite summer retreat for surfers, bathers and fisherman. It's popularity with Hawkes Bay people has thrust this land and its use into the ever watchful eye of the region, which has at times resulted in controversy. In the 1950s the Māori land was leased to Pākehā. Now, finally, whānau and hapū are returning to and reclaiming their whenua.​

With the introduction of the Papakāinga legislation, the opportunity for whānau/hapū to live, once again on Maori land, is a welcome solution for many unable to afford the exorbitant cost associated with home-ownership. This is true of Ngāti Mihiroa, who is now ten years into their papakāinga project.

Kaitiakitanga

Young people on a journey
​to care for land and sea

Waipuka rangatahi are exercising their kaitiakitanga, including a plan to continue monitoring paua nurseries. They've also been contributing to the development of a curriculum for strengthening Maori capacity to exercise their kaitiaki roles and responsibilities.
