A NURTURED SEED WILL BLOSSOM

Poipoia te kākano, kia puāwai is the name of a Kāinga Tahi, Kāinga Rua research project within the Building Better Homes Towns and Cities National Science Challenge.

The objective of Poipoia te kākano, kia puāwai is to enable mātauranga Māori housing solutions that work for Māori to blossom by nurturing research that is by, with and for whānau, hapū, iwi and Māori communities.

What began in the second half of 2019 with visits and conversations with those interested in facilitating local housing research led on to the co-creation with community stakeholders of research projects. These projects began in 2020, with funding from the Kāinga Tahi, Kāinga Rua funding stream of the Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities National Science Challenge.

TŪTAKI MAI

Three of the research projects are in Hawke’s Bay and one is in Te Kaha. Two projects involve rangatahi in the documentation of papakāinga development. One project, based in Te Wairoa, tells the story of those who have stayed at home or returned home to their kāinga tahi. The fourth research project is documenting the restoration of wetlands by those who have returned home.

The four research projects began in April 2020. By the end of 2023 the research had been completed, with the final reports being written in the first half of 2024.
